Although it is great to share work with the world, I almost find it more enjoyable to sift through the works of others and get inspired. Some days I’ll spend hours just commenting and adding pictures to my favorites, because I like to see what other photography is out there. I’ve found, since joining Flickr, my photography has generally improved. Of course, some of that is just taking a lot of pictures and reading photography books, but some of it is just because all skill levels of people are on Flickr and Deviantart.
For instance, if you want to learn German, where would you go? Germany. If you surround yourself with German speaking people, eventually you’ll catch on and adapt and learn the language really well. You’ll learn it better than just sitting at home reading a book and not applying the skills.
The same thing goes for photography, put yourself in a situation where others around you know more about it than you do, and you’ll learn and eventually equalize with them. I first discovered double exposure and cloning on Flickr, as well as several useful plugins for Photoshop. So if you have not already, make yourself a Flickr or a DeviantArt and get active in their communities, you might learn a thing or two.
